Do Red Light Therapy Masks Work?

by John Tsenekos | July 15, 2024

As the demand for effective, at-home skincare treatments grows, red light therapy masks have captured the attention of beauty enthusiasts and professionals alike. These masks, designed to emit specific wavelengths of light, claim to offer numerous aesthetic benefits from wrinkle reduction to collagen revitalization, but is it fact or too good to be true? This article investigates the validity of these claims, providing a comprehensive overview of how red light therapy masks work and what they may be able to do for your skin.

What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy is a scientifically-proven, non-invasive skincare treatment that uses red light at 630 to 700 nanometers (nm) to penetrate the skin's surface, reaching the deeper layers to stimulate collagen production and revitalize skin. This innovative approach aims to enhance skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and leave the skin looking refreshed and rejuvenated.

Red light therapy has gained popularity in both professional and home settings due to its ability to seamlessly integrate into regular skincare routines. It offers a convenient and effective solution for those looking to improve their skin's appearance without the need for invasive procedures or extensive downtime. Whether used in a clinical environment or as part of a home skincare regimen, red light therapy provides a hassle-free way to achieve healthier-looking, glowing skin.

How Do Red Light Therapy Masks Work?

Red light therapy masks are skincare devices with specialized bulbs that emit red light at a strength effective for stimulating collagen production, improving skin texture, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Most masks look similar to hockey masks but are relatively thicker in order to be able to house the bulbs and other electronic components, with the masks being designed to be easily strapped onto the face or head, ensuring a secure fit that maximizes the light's penetration into the skin.

In terms of features, some masks are cordless thanks to built-in power units, while others need to be plugged into an outlet during use. Many masks are also equipped with automatic timers, ensuring that the red light is on for the optimal treatment duration, typically between 10 to 20 minutes, without requiring manual intervention. However, not all masks offer this option, so users will need to set their own timer. In addition to their practical design, some masks also come with adjustable settings, allowing users to customize the intensity and duration of the treatment based on their individual skin needs. This flexibility makes red light therapy masks a versatile and user-friendly option for those looking to enhance their skincare regimen.

Key Benefits of Red Light Therapy Masks

Reduces the Appearance of Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Red light therapy masks can help stimulate collagen production, which helps to smooth out the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Better yet, these masks can be synergistically incorporated into an anti-aging skin routine where the mask and the ingredients in the products can help boost one another’s effects for maximum results.

Visibly Calms Redness From Inflammation

The red light emitted by these masks can help to reduce the redness caused by inflammation, especially when the source is acne. This makes red light therapy masks particularly beneficial for individuals with acne-prone skin, creating a calmer, more even-toned complexion.

Brightens Dark Circles

Regular use of red light therapy masks can help brighten the appearance of dark circles under the eyes and contribute to a more refreshed and awake look.

Rejuvenates and Energizes Skin

By promoting collagen production and targeting wrinkles, fine lines, and blemishes, red light therapy masks have an overall rejuvenation and energizing effect on the skin. This results in a healthier-looking, glowing complexion.

What Are LED Light Therapy Masks? Are They Different?

LED light therapy masks are advanced skincare devices designed for at-home use, utilizing specific wavelengths of light to address various skin concerns. The most popular is the red light therapy mask, which emits light at wavelengths of 630 to 700 nm.

Though red light is a key player in the light therapy industry, there are several other wavelengths that have also been shown to be beneficial for skincare, including blue light (430 to 460 nm) and near-infrared light (700 to 1,400). Finally, though less popular, green light (500 to 570 nm) and yellow light (560 to 590 nm) have also been used for concerns such as hyperpigmentation and redness.

How To Use Red Light Therapy Masks

Integrating red light therapy masks into your skincare regimen can enhance your skin's appearance and health. Below, we’ll provide the instructions specific to our own Wrinkle Retreat Red Light Therapy Mask. Follow these step-by-step instructions to seamlessly incorporate this beneficial skin treatment into your routine:

  1. Cleanse Your Face: Start by thoroughly cleansing your face to remove makeup, dirt, and excess oil. This ensures a clean surface for the red light to get to work. (We recommend our hydrating gel cleanser, which cleanses your skin without stripping it of its natural oils and nutrients!)
  2. Put the Mask On: Secure the mask over your face, and tighten the strap around your head (not too tight, just tight enough to hold the mask in place but still be comfortable).
  3. Begin Treatment: Hold down the power button to turn the mask on. The mask is built with an automatic timer for your treatment session, and will turn off when complete.
  4. Relax: Sit back and relax while the mask works its magic! This is a great step to integrate 10 minutes of much-deserved self-care; sit back and listen to music, or read a few pages of your current book.
  5. Remove the Mask: When the mask turns off, carefully remove it and store it in a clean, dry place until your next use.
  6. Continue Your Skincare Routine: From here, you can continue with your regular skincare routine! (For tips on the ideal skincare routine, check out our article about how to layer skincare products in the correct order.)

How Often Should I Use Red Light Therapy Masks?

As with most skincare treatments, consistency is key in getting your desired results. For optimal effect, we recommend using the red light therapy mask three times per week for the first four weeks. Each session will last 10 minutes with our mask, giving you a total of 30 minutes of red light therapy per week. Other devices may have varying treatment times, such as our 4-in-1 Skincare Wand which is used in four 3-minute increments for a total of 12 minutes, so ensure you’re following the included instruction guide if you’re just getting started with a new device.

At-Home LED Face Masks vs. In-Office Red Light Treatments

At-home LED face masks and in-office red light treatments can both offer significant benefits for skin, but they differ in terms of convenience, cost, intensity, and the use of phototherapy techniques. At-home masks provide the advantage of convenience, allowing users to incorporate red light therapy into their daily routines without the need for appointments or recurring costs. Thus, they are generally more cost-effective over time with really just the cost of the initial purchase of the device. In-office treatments typically use professional-grade equipment that delivers higher-intensity light, potentially yielding faster and more pronounced results. These treatments are administered by trained professionals such as licensed estheticians and dermatologists, ensuring precise application and monitoring.

All of that said, we’re proud to say our devices here at Solawave are both at-home devices and professional-grade. We’re a company focused on creating innovative light-based tools that can be used from the comfort of your home while still delivering incredible results, and you can see our Red Light Therapy Before & After to see those results for yourself!

Safety and Side Effects of Red Light Therapy Masks

Red light therapy masks are generally considered safe for most individuals when used as directed. As far as professional-grade skincare treatments go, red light therapy is non-invasive, and is gentle enough that it can be done multiple times per week on all types of skin typically with no side effects. Those who do experience side effects (skin irritation, redness) can usually resolve them by reducing their treatment frequency.

That said, there are a few recommendations in terms of who is best suited for red light therapy:

Red light therapy is not recommended for individuals under 22 years old, those prone to seizures or photosensitivity, or anyone with skin cancer. Additionally, if you have a known allergy to silicone or plastics, red light therapy masks may not be a good option for you since they are typically made of these materials. Even with our mask being made of medical-grade silicone, it can still irritate skin that is sensitive or allergic to this material.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid red light therapy as it hasn't been tested in these circumstances, so the potential risks are unknown. Furthermore, individuals with Fitzpatrick Skin Type V or VI are advised not to use the mask due to potential concerns. If you have any medical conditions affected by light or light sensitivity, such as epilepsy, or if you've recently undergone facial surgery, it’s best to consult with your physician or other primary care provider before beginning at-home red light therapy.

Most red light therapy masks, including ours, come with an instruction booklet that includes a section on contraindications and warnings that’s worth taking a look at if you’re concerned about whether or not you should be using the device.
